ড. ইকরাম হোসাইন আমাদের বিভাগ থেকে বিএসসি ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং করা স্নাতকদের মধ্যে প্রথম পূর্ণ অধ্যাপক হিসেবে নিয়োগ পেয়েছে কানাডার ম্যানিটোবা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে। ২০১০ সালে অধ্যাপক পদে পদোন্নতি পায়, যখন তার বয়স ৩৭ বা ৩৮-এর বেশি হবে না।

কগনিটিভ ও সেলুলার রেডিও নেটওয়ার্কে স্পেকট্রাম ও রিসোর্স ম্যানেজমেন্টে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অবদানের জন্য তাকে আইইইইর ফেলো নির্বাচিত করা হয়। অধ্যাপক হোসাইন IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials-এর মুখ্য সম্পাদক, তা ছাড়া IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications – Cognitive Radio Series and IEEE Wireless Communications-এর একজন সম্পাদক।

কম্পিউটার বিজ্ঞান বিষয়ে এ পর্যন্ত সে দশটি বই লিখেছে। ১২ বা ১৩ বছর সময়ের মধ্যেই সে ১২৯টি জার্নাল পেপার, দুটি আমেরিকান প্যাটেন্ট, ১৮টি বইয়ের অধ্যায় ও ১৩৮টি কনফারেন্স পেপার প্রকাশ করেছে, উদ্ধৃতি প্রায় ১০ হাজার! এ পর্যন্ত নয়জন ছাত্রের পিএইচডির কাজ সফলতার সঙ্গে তত্ত্বাবধান করেছে।

কিছুদিন আগে হাইডেলবার্গ লরেট ফোরামে আমন্ত্রিত হয়েছিলাম, যেখানে কম্পিউটার বিজ্ঞানগণিতের সর্বোচ্চ খেতাবপ্রাপ্ত ব্যক্তিদের আমন্ত্রণ করা হয়েছিল। এই বিষয়গুলোতে কম্পিউটারের Turing Award ও গণিতের Fields Medal কে নোবেল পুরস্কারের সমতুল্য ধরা হয়। সেই আসরে বাংলাদেশ থেকে একজন লরেটও ছিলেন নয়, এমনকি প্রবাসী বাংলাদেশিদের থেকেও নয়।”

“চিঠিতে হাইকোর্টে বিচারক নিয়োগ, বিচার বিভাগ পৃথকীকরণে উচ্চ আদালতের রায় বাস্তবায়নে দেরি হওয়ায় নিম্ন আদালতের শূন্যপদ পূরণ, বদলি-পদোন্নতি, বেতন ও সংশ্লিষ্ট বিষয় উল্লেখ করেছেন তিনি।

চিঠিতে উচ্চ আদালতকে শক্তিশালী করতে এক বা একাধিক সাবেক প্রধান বিচারপতিকে নিয়ে কমিটি, হাইকোর্টের বিচারক নিয়োগ, নিম্ন আদালতে বিষয়ে বিধি প্রণয়ন, কোর্ট অব রেকর্ড সংশ্লিষ্ট সংবিধানের ধারাগুলো সম্পর্কিত আইনের অনুপস্থিতি, বরাদ্দ, স্টাফ ও নিম্ন আদালতের তত্ত্বাবধানের কথা উল্লেখ করেছেন তিনি। এসবের পেছনে বেশ কিছু প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক ও আইনগত ঘাটতি রয়েছে বলেও মনে করেন তিনি।

বিচার বিভাগ পৃথকীকরণে উচ্চ আদালতের রায় বাস্তবায়নে দেরি হওয়ায় নিম্ন আদালতের শূন্যপদ পূরণ, বদলি-পদোন্নতি, বেতন ও সংশ্লিষ্ট বিষয়াদির কথাও চিঠিতে উল্লেখ করা হয়।

এসব বিষয়ে অবসরে যাওয়া এক বা একাধিক প্রধান বিচারপতিকে যুক্ত করে একটি কমিটি বা কমিশন গঠন এক্ষেত্রে কার্যকরি ভূমিকা রাখতে পারে বলেও চিঠিতে উল্লেখ করেন ড. কামাল।”

২২ জনের এ দলের তিন মাসের পরিশ্রমের ফসল এই গাড়ি। উদ্দেশ্য, ভারতের দিল্লিতে অনুষ্ঠেয় ‘ইলেকট্রিক সোলার ভেহিক্যাল চ্যাম্পিয়নশিপ ২০১৪-১৫’-তে অংশগ্রহণ

[Technical Details: ] হালকা রাখতে তাঁরা পিভিসি বোর্ডের আবরণে তৈরি করেছেন গাড়িটি। ৭ ফুট লম্বা ও ৪ ফুট প্রস্থের গাড়ি দুজন মানুষ বহন করতে পারে। গাড়িটির পাঁচটি সোলার প্যানেল ২৮০ ওয়াট বিদ্যুৎ উৎপন্ন করতে পারে। চারটি ব্যাটারি বিদ্যুৎ সংরক্ষণ করে রাখবে, প্রতি ঘণ্টায় সর্বোচ্চ ৪৫ কিলোমিটার বেগে একটানা চলবে ৬ ঘণ্টা।

যদি কোনো প্রতিষ্ঠান এগিয়ে আসে তো বাণিজ্যিকভাবে বাজারজাতকরণ করা সম্ভব  হবে। সে ক্ষেত্রে ধারণক্ষমতা এবং গতিবেগ—দুটোই বাড়ানো যাবে। দেশীয় প্রযুক্তিতে তৈরি হওয়ায় ক্রেতাদের সাধ্যের মাঝেই থাকবে।

এখন পর্যন্ত প্রকল্পটির সব খরচ চালিয়েছেন শিক্ষার্থীরা নিজের পকেট থেকে। এমনকি শখের বাইসাইকেল বিক্রি করেও তাঁরা প্রয়োজনীয় অর্থের জোগান দিয়েছেন। ‘ইয়েস ইউ ক্যান’ (“Yes You Can”) বা ‘তুমিই পারবে’ নামের দলটি সব বাধা পেরিয়ে সফল হতে চায়, দেখতে চায় সবুজ এক পৃথিবী।”

সংবাদ সম্মেলনে প্রধান অতিথি হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন ড্যাফোডিল ইন্টারন্যাশনাল ইউনিভার্সিটির উপ উপাচার্য প্রফেসর ড. এম গোলাম রহমান। ড্যাফোডিলের বাণিজ্য ও অর্থনীতি অনুষদের অধ্যাপক ড. মুহাম্মদ মাহাবুব আলী সংবাদ সম্মেলনে ‘ব্যাচেলর অব এন্টারপ্রিন্যুরশিপ ডেভেলপমেন্ট’ এর উপর মূল প্রবন্ধ উপস্থাপন করেন।

সম্মেলনে বক্তারা বলেন, ‘ব্যাচেলর অব এন্টারপ্রিন্যুরশিপ ডেভেলপমেন্ট’ একটি খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ও অমিত সম্ভাবনাময় বিষয়। এ বিষয়ে ডিগ্রি নেওয়ার পর শিক্ষার্থীরা সহজেই দক্ষ মানবসম্পদে পরিণত হবে। ফলে তারা উদ্যোক্তা হয়ে চাকরি খোঁজার পরিবর্তে নিজেরা স্বাবলম্বী হবেন।”

“Madhu Sudan is sited for his seminal contribution to probabilistically checkable proofs (PCPs). The PCP Theorem has been hailed as one of the most fundamental contributions of theoretical computer science. Sudan’s work on list-decoding opened up the possibility of correcting far larger numbers of errors in data than previously thought possible — bringing new vigor and advances to the field. The focus of Prof. Sudan’s work has been on how to efficiently extract useful information from data that has errors. This theme has wide-ranging applications: from theoretical (e.g., how to verify a proof) to practical (e.g., how to recover correct data stored on a CD when it gets scratched).

Prior to joining Microsoft Research New England in 2009, Prof. Madhu Sudan joined the MIT faculty in 1997 — where among other roles he served as an Associate Director of MIT’s CSAIL from 2007-2009. He received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1992. His current research interests include semantic communication and property testing. 

Sudan has won many awards for his work during his distinguished career, including the ACM Distinguished Doctoral Dissertation (1993), the Godel Prize (2001), and the Rolf Nevanlinna Prize (2002). He is a fellow of ACM and of American Mathematical Society.”

Manhattan Scale project on BioSciences, Translational Medicine and BioEngineering

 

 

I’ll start a Manhattan Scale project on BioSciences, Translational Medicine and BioEngineering – that will define the frontiers of Healthcare and related fields – like Environment, Energy (Fuel; Photosynthesis inspired Solar Cells?) & Sustainability, Agriculture.

 

  • Cancer, Ebola, Parkinson’s, AIDS, Alzheimer’s,
  • Disabilities and losses (Eyesight loss; Limb Amputee, etc. <- Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine. We can replace with Mechanical / Physical parts as long as we our Stem Cell / Regenerative Medicine Tech is not advanced enough – but remember – Biology – is the ultimate technology.

 

My Guiding Principle would be – Restore the Normal (as opposed to the artificial – Mechanical devices or Pills or Drugs) – possibly through
  • Stem Cell / Regenerative Medicine or
  • Gene Therapy.

 

As long as we can’t make headway in Stem Cell / Gene Therapy – we can do away with Drugs and Devices – but the ultimate future is Biology.
My Plan is to build
  • Medical / Scientific / Engineering Equipments (that would be required in my own research) and
  • Sell and use the profit to fund my research / further work.

 

So only limited funding would be required in the first phase – and from that point on self – funding / reinvesting.
Equipments would require continuous innovations and improvements. For example,
  • Gene Sequencers (Bringing down the cost of Gene sequencing of a single Genome to several hundred dollars or maybe $100.)
  • Robots that automate much of Experimental work. [Consider: Combinatorial Chemistry – parallel reactions]

 

Another line of products (lots of innovations)
  • Medical / Surgical Equipments (from smaller Ultra-Sounds to “Da Vinci”-like Surgical Robots)
  • Healthcare IT Infrastructure and Services (to Hospitals, Clinics) – Examples:
    • Sensors that measure Body parameters and store data in Database / Cloud <- Big Data 2.0 on Data;
    • Watson-like AI on Medical Literature (e.g., Pubmed) to augment Medical Researchers and Physicians

Manhattan Scaleproject on BioSciences, Translational Medicine and BioEngineering

 
I’ll soon start (as soon as I get funding) a Manhattan Scale project on BioSciences, Translational Medicine and BioEngineering – that will define the frontiers of Healthcare and related fields – like Environment, Energy (Fuel; Photosynthesis inspired Solar Cells?) & Sustainability, Agriculture.

 

  • Cancer, Ebola, Perkinson’s, AIDS, Alzheimer’s,
  • Disabilities and losses (Eyesight loss; Limb Amputee, etc. <- Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine. We can replace with Mechanical / Physical parts as long as we our Stem Cell / Regenerative Medicine Tech is not advanced enough – but remember – Biology – is the ultimate technology.
My Guiding Principle would beRestore the Normal (as opposed to the artificial – Mechanical devices or Pills or Drugs) – possibly through
  • Stem Cell / Regenerative Medicine or
  • Gene Therapy.
As long as we can’t make headway in Stem Cell / Gene Therapy – we can do away with Drugs and Devices – but the ultimate future is Biology.
 
My Plan is to build
  • Medical / Scientific / Engineering Equipments (that would be required in my own research) and
  • Sell and use the profit to fund my research / further work.
So only limited funding would be required in the first phase – and from that point on self – funding / reinvesting.
 
Equipments would require continuous innovations and improvements. For example,
  • Gene Sequencers (Bringing down the cost of Gene sequencing of a single Genome to several hundred dollars or maybe $100.)
  • Robots that automate much of Experimental work. [Consider: Combinatorial Chemistry – parallel reactions]
 
Another line of products (lots of innovations)
  • Medical / Surgical Equipments (from smaller Ultra-Sounds to “Da Vinci”-like Surgical Robots)
  • Healthcare IT Infrastructure and Services (to Hospitals, Clinics) – [Examples:
  • Sensors that measure Body parameters and store data in Database / Cloud <- Big Data 2.0 on Data;
  • Watson-like AI on Medical Literature (e.g., Pubmed) to augment Medical Researchers and Physicians]
 


Hiring
 

A few BioEngineering / BioMedical Engineering / Molecular Biology / Cell Biology / BioChemistry / BioPhysics / BioInformatics / Computational Biology PhDs – each concentrating on a particular part – under my supervision. For example:

  • One researcher concentrating on Transport system of Cells – 2013 Nobel Physiology or Medicine Prize Work (Collaborating with other researchers focused on other Cellular organelles or Extra-cellular Matrix)
  • Another researcher concentrating on Spatial Representations and Motor Planning in the Brain – 2014 Nobel Physiology or Medicine Prize Work
  • Couple working on how to repair / replace Damaged Organs with Tissue / Organs grown from Stem Cells – carrying on the 2012 Nobel Physiology or Medicine Prize Work.
 
Another Plan:
I will review and modernizethe FDA (Drug, Medical Device) appoval process.
Going through a process that takes 10 years and costs Billion Dollars – after inventing a drug [and device] – to bring it to market – kills off many promising drugs.

When you get used to believing that, you are the best in the world – you stop pushing yourself.Companies that once thought – they were the best in the world and hence no need for innovations – were challenged after my arrival.

[No where is this trend more evident than Google.To get a feeling – glimpse at acquisitions made by Google since last November (2013) (Companies that focus on Physical Digital Computing products)] (including 8 Robotics companies and Nest and Skybox Imaging)

Microsoft
In the past few years Microsoft has lost the “Brand Appeal” it once enjoyed.
When people use Google (products and services), they feel proud (geeky, Trendy – whatever you say) of it.
When people use iPhone or iPad, they feel they are being smart by using Apple products. (“Apple products are amazing – beautiful and intuitive!”)
 
Brand appeal depends more on “word of mouth” than on the products themselves.
 
One of the areas I can work on is to bring back that “Brand Appeal” to Microsoft products (that Microsoft once enjoyed).
“Microsoft is cool!” or maybe “Microsoft is back!”
“Surface is just awesome!”
